Spiritual Direction helps us learn how to actively listen to God. The world is full of noise, often distracting us from becoming who we are called to be. Working with a spiritual director can help us to deepen our relationship with the Lord as we come to better understand ourselves, how God loves us, and how He is working in our lives. We can learn how our story is a part of God’s Divine Narrative. This can make all the difference in the world.
Are you searching?
Do you sense there is something more, just beyond your reach?
Are you feeling broken?
Lost?
Are you seeking answers?
Perhaps the Holy Spirit is beckoning you to a deeper relationship with the Lord.
The only “requirement” for Spiritual Direction is that you have some kind of prayer life. That’s it!
Your prayer life doesn’t need to be complex or sophisticated. Jesus welcomes those of us with little who are seeking to increase our faith.
If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
You would say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’
and it would obey you.
Luke 17:6
Spiritual direction has its roots in ancient Christianity and different traditions or styles have developed over time. Starting with the Desert Fathers and Mothers, people have sought guidance as to how they should live their lives. Saints Ignatius Loyola, Francis de Sales, John of the Cross, and Theresa of Avila are well-known for their writings on spiritual direction and helping others to grow in holiness by drawing closer to the Lord. In short, spiritual direction acknowledges the sacred in a person and helps them to recognize the sacred in themselves.
More recently, Pope Francis has encouraged everyone to be involved in spiritual direction as he states in Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) :
Personal accompaniment in processes of growth …In our world, ordained ministers and other pastoral workers can make present the fragrance of Christ’s closeness and his personal gaze. The Church will have to initiate everyone – priests, religious and laity – into this “art of accompaniment” which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other (cf. Ex 3:5). The pace of this accompaniment must be steady and reassuring, reflecting our closeness and our compassionate gaze which also heals, liberates, and encourages growth in the Christian life (169-173)
Typically, meetings are once per month for about an hour. Your spiritual director will sit and listen, reflecting your feelings and occasionally asking questions to help you deepen your understanding of God’s presence in your life. You should be doing most of the talking! One way to think of it is that both the directee and the director are open to and listening for the Holy Spirit together, to encourage the directee on their faith journey. Sessions should be a sacred, safe space, without judgment or shame. Growing in the spiritual life is often a slow process, so it is helpful to be patient. Most of the “work” takes place outside of the session, as you ponder how the Spirit is moving and open your heart to His healing mercy and grace.
No! My faith is in the Roman Catholic tradition, but that doesn't mean you need to share the same tradition. Our God welcomes everyone and loves all of His creation, and I strive to do the same.
